The Arts can take us anywhere!

This past week the school was very fortunate to have two very special guests come and work with our middle school students.

Coming all the way from Brazil and Scotland Uirá Abondanza Kuhlmann and Philip Kingscott are both professionals in the Art world. They offered fresh knowledge and perspectives that the students can take away with them and recall in their future music and drama lessons.

Philip Kingscott’s theatre workshop was focused on commedia dell’arte, archetypes and stage fighting. They had a lot of fun learning some simple but effective stage fighting moves that would have been used in commedia dell’arte and other slapstick styles.

After which the students really took to identifying characters we all know (archetypes) and learning about the main commedia dell’arte characters like Arlecchino, Brighella and Dottore.

Uirá Abondanza Kuhlmann guided G7-8-9 in performing some masterpieces such as Libertango by Astor Piazzolla and Night on Bald Mountain by Modest Mussorgsky by using the colourful Boomwhackers.

Our students had to foster their thinking and collaboration skills because they could play these famous melodies by throwing each other the tuned tubes from one side of the gym to the other! It was quite challenging but also very exciting!
